The Smith & Wesson M13 Aircrewmen Revolver was a lightweight gun contracted by the United States Air Force, specifically the Strategic Air Command, to arm their airmen with an emergency sidearm. Both Colt and Smith & Wesson were contracted to produce the M13 Aircrewmen with the same specifications. However, the parts between the Colt and S&W versions were not interchangeable. The lightweight design was necessary due to the need to keep nuclear-capable bombers in the skies at all times as a deterrent during the Cold War era.
The Smith & Wesson M13 Aircrewmen weighed only 11 ounces when fully loaded with 6 rounds of M41 .38 Special ammunition. The M41 round was specifically designed for this revolver, as regular .38 Special ammunition was not recommended due to the aluminum construction of the frame and cylinder. The lightweight nature of the revolver and the potential risks associated with firing regular .38 Special ammo led to the recall and destruction of most M13 Aircrewmen revolvers in 1959.
